Saturday, August 17th, 1907: There is an old saying, "Bad news comes in threes." Superstitious or not, it came true today in the case of the Boston Doves. Sam Horn hit three homers and they still lost the game 10-7 to Pittsburgh at South End Grounds III. "We had our chances to win the game, but we just didn't come through like the Pirates did. Sam hit the heck out of the ball. I'm just sorry we couldn't win it for him," his manager said in the postgame press conference. In addition to the homers, Horn collected 4 hits in 5 at-bats, 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs. He said after the game, "Easy swings get you home runs. I told myself not to press on the last one. It had to be a nice and easy swing." S. Horn struck out in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off L. McGlothen in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off L. McGlothen in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off H. Flener in the 9th. Horn is batting .241 this season in 109 games with 37 home runs, 98 RBIs and 75 runs scored. He has 102 hits in 423 at-bats. |
